How to Set Up an eSIM on iPhone & Android
Setting up an eSIM takes less than 5 minutes. This guide walks you through the entire process for both iPhone and Android, plus troubleshooting tips if something goes wrong.
Before You Start: Check Compatibility
iPhone eSIM Support
- iPhone XS, XR, and all newer models
- iPhone SE (2nd generation and later)
- Must be carrier-unlocked
Android eSIM Support
- Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer
- Google Pixel 3 and newer
- OnePlus, Xiaomi, and other brands (varies by model)
- Must be carrier-unlocked
Important: Your phone must be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it through a carrier on a payment plan, contact them to unlock it before your trip.
Step 1: Purchase Your eSIM Plan
- Choose a provider (we recommend comparing plans on Navi)
- Select your destination and data plan
- Complete the purchase — you'll receive a QR code or activation details via email
Step 2: Install on iPhone
Method A: QR Code (Most Common)
- Open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data)
- Tap Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan
- Tap Use QR Code
- Scan the QR code from your provider
- Tap Continue and wait for activation
- Label it (e.g., "Japan Travel")
- Choose it as your data line
Method B: Manual Installation

- Enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your provider
- Tap Next and wait for activation
Step 3: Install on Android

- Tap + (Add)
- Tap Download a SIM instead
- Scan the QR code
- Confirm installation
- Set as data SIM
Step 4: Configure Your Settings
After installation, configure these settings for the best experience:
Set Data Line
- Go to Settings → Cellular (iPhone) or SIM Manager (Android)
- Set your eSIM as the Mobile Data line
- Keep your home SIM for calls/SMS if needed
Enable Data Roaming
- Settings → Cellular → tap your eSIM → enable Data Roaming
- This is required for most travel eSIMs to work
Turn Off Home SIM Data
- Disable data on your home SIM to avoid accidental roaming charges
- Keep it active for calls/texts only
Step 5: Activate at Your Destination
Some eSIMs activate instantly, others activate when you arrive:
- Instant activation: Works immediately after installation (Airalo, Nomad)
- Destination activation: Activates when you connect to a local network (some Holafly plans)
Pro tip: Install your eSIM 1-2 days before your trip. This way, if there are any issues, you have time to contact support.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use eSIM and physical SIM at the same time? Yes! This is called Dual SIM. Your physical SIM handles calls/texts from your home number, while the eSIM provides local data.
Will I lose my eSIM if I restart my phone? No. The eSIM stays installed through restarts. You only lose it if you manually delete it.
Can I reuse my eSIM on another trip? Most travel eSIMs are single-use. You'll need to purchase a new one for your next trip.
How many eSIMs can my phone store? iPhone can store 8+ eSIMs (but only one active at a time alongside a physical SIM). Android varies by model.
